Overview and Instructions from Achar with English translation below:

– Grahana is the capturing of shadow planet of Rahu on Surya. As the Puranic story of churning of the ocean (samudra mathana) goes,  Lord takes avataara as Dhanvantari with Amruta Kalasha. To prevent quarrel between Devas and Asuras, Lord also takes the form of the captivating Mohini who seductively lines them up in two separate rows and starts giving Amruta to only the Devas. As the Amruta is nearly exhausted,  Asura Rahu smartly moves across to the Devata line and is about consume Amruta when Surya sees this and beheads Rahu. To take revenge occasionally, Rahu causes Surya to be come invisible during Solar eclipse.

– Note that this situation only affects humans and not Devata-s. On a lighter note, while we humans have Pani Grahana (marriage) where spouses are bound together for life, Surya Grahana and Chandra Grahana come only occasionally giving us an opportunity for us to do many good things.

– For this very auspicious time of eclipse, after finishing usual morning ablutions we complete Sandhyavandana, Japa, Brahma yaGYa, and perform Phala (fruit) naivedya but not with cooked food.

– Unlike Ekadashi, the pooja and naivedya is not only for Bhagavanta but for all devata-s, except no rice and full prasaadaM is prepared yet – and no Vaishvadeva homa also.

– In the beginning of eclipse, we have our bath and performe nirmalya and do japa, tarpana.

– Note that during eclipse parva kaala all puNya is magnified 1 Crore times – japa, tarpaNa and daana/charity also.

– In Kali yuga we are always performing sins/paapa, so time for good/puNya is less and this eclipse time is a great opportunity to compensate.

– Upavaasa, or abstinence from food, is required to make sure we have concentration on our anuShThaana or adhyaatmic efforts. So  eight hours before eclipse we stop eating because it takes time for food to digest and also we need to be free from going to bathroom, sleep etc. during eclipse time to focus on japa and other sat-karma.

– Some people follow eclipse day like Ekaadashi, i.e. fasting the previous day but this is not required since we are only focusing the mind properly during eclipse time, not for other reasons.

– During Eclipse the best recourse is to perform Gaayatri Mantra (if you have had Brahmopadesha), Vishnu Sahasranaama, your favorite IshTa mantra, or at least Achyutaaya Namaha, Anantaaya Namaha, Govindaaya Namaha

– Pitru kaarya of Shraaddha (Aama, hiraNya) and tila tarpaNa can be performed also to please our ancestors by those with adhikaara.

– Daana (charity) is of immense benefit of various types esp. if you are born in Revati Nakshatra/ Meena Raashi but also for others – with oil, grains and dakShiNa offerings.

– There is also opportunity to do YaGYa but unlike japa etc. to be done individually, this is done through Purohits. For individual effortss japa and paarayaNa are of best value.

– All of these is done via a sankalpa first and then finally KrishnaarpaNaM according to Lord Himself in Gita.

yatkaroṣi yadaśnāsi yajjuhoṣi dadāsi yat . yattapasyasi kaunteya tatkuruṣva madarpaṇam .. 9.27 ..3

O Kunti’s son, whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer into the fire, whatever you give, what austerities you practise dedicate the same as an offering to Me (with a clear notion that you are not an independent agent and that all acts are prompted by God and therefore, they are to be rendered to Him).

– Some people maybe on travel our out of home. But even in airport or airplane you can always do japa of naamatrayam: Achuytaaya Namaha, Anantaaya Namaha, Govindaaya Namaha

– Also children who may have to go to school, ask them to not eat/drink between 12-3pm and keep mind on learning and good things.

– Sankalpa as usual +
